What Is Google Authenticator?
It is a free security program that can help you safeguard your accounts against password theft. It’s simple to set up and may be utilized in a procedure known as two-factor authentication (2FA), which is available on popular sites such as Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and others.
When you log into multiple services, the app (iOS/Android) creates a random code that is used to validate your identity. Although the code can be provided to your phone through text message every time, the Authenticator app adds an extra layer of security.
SMS-based two-factor authentication has a known security weakness, and any dedicated hacker can try to socially engineer an attack against your phone company. The Authenticator software prevents SMS-based attacks by employing algorithms to generate codes on your phone.
Here’s how to set it up Google Authenticator
1. Get Google Authenticator from the Apple App Store or the Google Play store for Android. It’s completely free.
2. Next, enable two-factor authentication on your Google account. Sign in with your Google account. Select “Two-Step Verification” under “Security and Sign-In,” then scroll down to the “Authenticator app” option.
3. Select your phone, Android or iPhone.
4. Launch the Google Authenticator app on your phone and press the plus button
5. At the bottom of your screen, you’ll see two options: “Scan barcode” and “Manual entry.”
To finish the procedure, you only need to select one of these options. Using the “Scan barcode” option requires you to download a QR scanner from the app store and then point your phone at the QR code on your computer screen to verify Google Authenticator’s connection with your account.
In contrast, “Manual Entry” just implies that Google will email you a 16-digit number. The code is then entered to complete the verification process:
To verify that the code you’re inputting is in sync with the Authenticator’s most recent passcode creation, turn the “Time Based” option to ON.
When you log into the account you’ve linked with Google Authenticator, you’ll be prompted to input a six-digit verification number. Simply launch the Google Authenticator app to generate a fresh, randomized code for you to enter.
