For each storage capacity option, the iPhone 14 Plus costs Rs. 10,000 more than the iPhone 14.

Despite being the most expensive of its siblings, the iPhone 13 Pro Max appears to have been the second-most popular over the past year. Apple is now aiming its products at those who want a larger display but don’t require (or don’t want to pay for) all of the premium features found in the Pro models. The new iPhone 14 Plus is an obvious upsell, designed to entice iPhone buyers and upgraders to spend a little more than they would otherwise. Android phones with screens larger than 5.5 inches now account for more than half of the market in some countries, so Apple should target lower price points with a large phone. This is one of the ways in which Apple has fallen behind the Android world, dating back to the iPhone 5.

The iPhone 13 mini has no replacement, but given that not much has changed between generations and that it has now been reduced in price, it still serves the same target audience just as well. iPhones typically receive software updates for more than five years, which keeps entry-level buyers and those who just want something small because they’re used to older phones happy.

The new Purple color option is subtle and soft, but it is noticeable.

What’s new in the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus?
There isn’t much smartphone manufacturers can do to keep their products feeling new and exciting. The iPhone 14 is a competent iterative step forward from the iPhone 13, but it doesn’t break any new ground and will not entice anyone to buy it. The iPhone 14 Plus, on the other hand, represents a completely new offering, and if you can afford it, you might be tempted to upgrade.

For me, the most appealing feature of the iPhone 14 Plus is that it is significantly lighter than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, weighing 203g versus 240g. If you were put off by how bulky and unwieldy the flagship models are, this new option may be a welcome compromise. The iPhone 14 remains one of the lightest and most user-friendly devices in its class.

What’s more, the iPhone 14 Plus promises the best battery life of any iPhone ever. Because of its less demanding display and other hardware, it can outperform its premium siblings in this regard.

The camera system has been enhanced, with a larger sensor and an aperture of f/1.5 for the new 12-megapixel main camera. The most significant change is that the front camera now supports autofocus, allowing you to be more creative with self portraits. Low-light performance is said to be at least twice as good across all cameras, up from the iPhone 13 series. Between the camera hardware, processor, and iOS, Apple has created a new set of capabilities known as the “Photonic Engine.” This essentially means that HDR processing, which combines details from multiple exposures to produce the final image you see, is now occurring much earlier in the capture and processing pipeline. Apple claims that working with uncompressed data allows it to lock focus faster, render colors more accurately, and improve detail significantly. Action Mode is a new video stabilisation mode that uses the sensor area beyond the frame of what you’re shooting and then crops each frame to compensate for motion, producing results comparable to using a gimbal, according to Apple.

Crash detection is a new feature based on the more advanced accelerometer and gyroscope found in all iPhones of this generation. It can detect sudden braking and recognize sounds, triggering a call to emergency services and your trusted contacts to get you help if necessary. Satellite-based emergency SMS communications are currently limited to the United States and Canada, and it also makes use of Apple hardware and software to locate satellites without the use of a large antenna. It’s extremely slow and has limited functionality, but it could save your life if you ever find yourself without cellular network coverage. It will be a paid service, but the price has not yet been determined, and the first two years are free.

What you don’t get with the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus
Apple believes that the core hardware from last year is still adequate for use in the latest iPhones. The A15 Bionic SoC powers the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, though it’s a slightly more capable version than last year’s Pro models, with one extra GPU core, so there’s still some improvement. This is the first time Apple has separated its Pro and non-Pro models with completely different SoCs – this could be due to supply chain and manufacturing issues, or it could be a sign that we have truly reached a point of diminishing returns in terms of CPU power for phones.

One major disappointment is that the 120Hz ProMotion display feature from last year’s Pro models has not been carried over to this year’s iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. The resolution, brightness, and color capabilities remain unchanged from last year. You also don’t get the cool new Dynamic Island functionality or the always-on display. Apple has also reserved the premium models’ 48-megapixel main camera sensor and second-generation sensor shift stabilisation.

Since Apple has gone all-in on eSIMs, there is no SIM tray in the US. This isn’t always a good thing, but Android manufacturers are likely to follow suit. Aside from being slightly thicker, the iPhone 14’s physical design is nearly identical to that of the iPhone 13, with a glass back, Ceramic Shield front, and aluminum frame. There are no new durability claims, no upgrades to MagSafe or wired charging speed, and no USB Type-C port.

The iPhone 14 Plus is likely to sell well simply because it is a larger iPhone that is less expensive than the Pro Max models. The vanilla iPhone 14 is likely to have a smaller audience, owing to the fact that it does not offer anything significantly new.
