The German sportswear juggernaut Puma has announced the launch of Black Station, its first-ever metaverse internet experience. During the current New York Fashion Week, it will debut limited edition redeemable physical shoes with distinctive non-fungible tokens (NFTs) as part of its “Futrograde” exhibition (NYFW). The goal of Puma Black Station is to provide customers with an immersive and engaging portal through which they may experience the brand’s future. Puma is the newest athletic company to provide digital collectibles, following Adidas Originals.

Visitors to the metaverse website will enter a hyper-realistic digital lobby environment with three distinct portals. The first two portals, which will be available starting September 7, will include never-before-seen Nitro NFRNO and Nitro Fastroid footwear related to Puma’s newest Nitropass NFT mint. The shoes made their debut during New York Fashion Week.

FTR, a venture firm, built the Black Station metaverse.

The metaverse is built with Unreal Engine 5 and supports cutting-edge visuals.

“Black Station was Puma’s home for our most original fashion concepts twenty years ago,” said Adam Petrick, Puma’s Chief Brand Officer. “Given the frontiers we are pushing in product design and digital, we thought it was appropriate to reintroduce Black Station as a new doorway for digital exploration spanning fashion, athletic performance, our legacy classics, and innovation.”

It should be noted that this is not Puma’s first venture towards Web 3.0. Puma used NFTs in a promotional campaign with Manchester City earlier this year, featuring limited edition NFTs of Puma footwear worn by star Sergio Aguero.

Puma’s Futrograde line is the latest in a growing trend of apparel and luxury brands creating tangible products that are linked to digital assets, known as “phygitals.” Prada, the luxury brand, issued NFTs in May of this year, which could be redeemed for actual products such as shirts.

Puma’s use of a metaverse space is not new either. Brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Estee Lauder have designed similar spaces for individuals to browse digital representations of their products up-close.

PUMA Black Station has been designed as an immersive and interactive space to experience the brand’s future. Black Station, as a blank and ever-evolving 3D canvas, will become a dynamic site to explore, linking customers with numerous web3 activations that will emerge over the next year and beyond.

“Black Station was PUMA’s home for our most original fashion creations twenty years ago,” said Adam Petrick, PUMA’s Chief Brand Officer.

“Given the frontiers we are pushing in product design and digital, we thought it was appropriate to reintroduce Black Station as a new doorway for digital exploration spanning fashion, athletic performance, our legacy classics, and innovation.”

Visitors begin their journey by entering a hyper-realistic digital lobby room with three distinct portals. The first two portals, which will be available starting September 7th, will reveal never-before-seen Nitro NFRNO and Nitro Fastroid footwear tied to PUMA’s newest NFT Nitropass release.

Those who purchased a Nitropass will receive two NFTs, one of which is related to actual things and the other to a personalised experience linked to their selected sneaker. Miners can claim their actual shoes after the Futrograde event by burning their product-claimed NFT. This marks the brand’s first foray into the web3 market, with the establishment of its first PUMA-owned NFT that connects digital design with physical items for customers.

PUMA urged its in-house designers to push the creative boundaries in order to conceive what a 3D digital shoe may look like. “When imagining these footwear designs, our design team took a lot of liberties.” We assured them there was no limit.

Through bold, inventive designs, the shoes reinterpret famous PUMA elements. Fastroid pushes the boundaries of a performance tech silhouette with exaggerated volumes of Nitro foam in gradient high-impact colours. With the goal of “sport is art,” NFRNO looks to be a blend of the past and future, borrowing influence from rare archival styles to create a multi-part molded structure.

The third Black Station gateway will serve as the entrance to the digital NYFW metaverse fashion show. Visitors will be immersed in an interactive world that has been abstracted using point cloud effects. They will go through a digital version of the display, where visitors will be able to interact with the collection’s components.
